Located at the Idukki district on the eastern side of Kerela "the Periyar Sanctuary" is best known reserve in Kerela and is one of the most popular sanctuary with its picturesque setting surrounding a lake in the Cardamom hills. The sanctuary covers an area of 777sq. km. Due to its mostly Moist Evergreen forest and Semi Evergreen Forest provides an excellent spot for viewing mammals and aves. Periyar is one of the must visit destination with altitude ranging from 150 mts to highest of 2020 mts. There are patches of varied forest including moist evergreen & semi evergreen forest , Some ot he speciality birds of the area are Broad tailed grassbird, Wynnad laughingthrush , Malabar trogon , Nilgiri flycatcher & white bellied treepie.

The Avifauna around the lake is not particularly diverse, but you will see some species on the boat trip which is not found elsewhere at Periyar. Aves Found at this area are Brahminy Kite, Ospreys, Black Baza, Changeable Hawk, Black Eagles, Common Kingfisher, Stork Billed, Green Imperial & Nilgiri wood Pigeon, Malabar Grey, Great Hornbills, Alpine & House Swifts, Indian Swiftlet, Crested Treeswift, Lesser Yellownape, Heart spotted and streak throated woodpecker, Black rumped flamebacks, white bellied woodpecker, Crested Goshawk, Rufous Bellied Eagles, Painted BUsh Quail, Malabar Trogon, White Bellied Treepie, Wynaad Laughingthrush, Nilgiri Flycatcher, Broad Tailed Grassbird, Great Cormorants, Oriental Darters, Ashy Woodswallows, White rumped needletails, Brown Fish Owl, Malabar Trogon, Indian Scimitar Babbler, Dark Fronted and Rufous Babblers, Crimson Backed Sunbird, Little Spiderhunter, Wynaad Laughingthrush, Drongo Cuckoo, Chestnut headed Bee Eater, Malabar Grey Hornbill, White Cheeked and Crimson Fronted Barbets, Indian Pitta, Yellow browed Bulbul, Puff throated Babbler, Orange headed Thrush, Loten's Sunbird, Pompadour Green Pigeon, Emerald Dove, Chestnut Winged and Banded Bay Cuckoos, Oriental Scops, Brown Hawk Owls, Indian Nightjar, Dark fronted Babblers, Crested Serpent Eagles, Peregrine Falcon, Jungle Bush Quail, Yellow footed Green Pigeon, Vernal Hanging Parrot, Lesser Coucal, Collared Scops Owl, Spot Bellied Eagle Owl, Bar winged Fly Catcher, Black crested Bulbul, Brown cheeked Fulvetta, Large Billed Leaf, Greenish and Western Crowned Warblers, Indian Blue Robin, Black lored Tit, White browned Wagtail, Purple rumped Sunbird, Oriental WHite Eye, Ashy Minivet, Yellow Rumped Fly Catcher and many More .....
